Singing in the Rain

In the movie “Singing in the Rain” it tells the story of a silent film production company making a difficult transition to sound. It tells the story when monumental studios made the silent film “Fueling Cavalier” into a film with sound named the “the dancing cavalier” so that the can stay relevant in their society. I thought the characters in this movie definitely fit the part. It consisted of Lina Lamont who caught the eye of many men back in that time but when she opened her mouth it wasn’t such a pleasure. She couldn’t sing and to top it off she believed what the critics was writing about her and the other star Don Lockwood. She made their stories her reality which I thought was strange and she needed some help. However Don Lockwood found her very annoying and needy and when introduced to Kathy Selden, fell in love with her. She was the perfect person with the voice to match to cover lina’s sound. Lina raised the question what it means to actually act. She did not feel that the stars in silent films were actors because they had no lines. I also cannot leave out the Don Lockwood (who I would consider best friend also) right hand man and old childhood friend, Cosmo Brown. He was the comedian of the show and brought light on even credit distribution with the films. He was never recognized for his work even though it was equally as important as Don Lockwood acting.

The history of the film industry has came a long way. I can’t imagine not working with protocols and downloading the effects to make a sound come to life. Back then you would have to literally do things by scratch track after track to make just a small portion of the movie, MY GOODNESS!! Films started adding sound by the 1920’s because during the great depression sound was the only way out. Of course there was some challenges like placements of the mic and how the set was designed in order to catch the sound but sound helped Hollywood for the better. It was funny to see the actors reaction to the sound image. They actually thought the person was behind the sheet talking. Even though the voice was there technology was still not that advanced to capture the sound and the image so they had to record a track to sychronize it with the video

In the scene posted it showed the difficulties the sound crew had with the scene. They disguised the mic in the bushes but it was difficult for her to actually act and speak into the mic. I understood the frustration on both parts because she is not able to move around and place her face in her actors face without being yelled at by the sound crew and the sound crew could not do what they was suppose to do if they could not catch her voice. It showed that technology was not nearly as advanced as it is today and it was difficult to think of locations to put the mic so that it would not be seen.

Museum of Moving Images

Going to the museum of moving images I learned a lot about the behind the scenes 20150422_121203management that makes the television shows and movies what they are. I had no idea all the work it took to make a movie but also how amazing it is to see the ending results. I had the opportunity to participate in the ADR exercise that allowed me to record my own voice over an already existing movie. In the Automated DiaIogue Booth I choose to do a scene from the movie, school of rock and I will admit t was difficult to match my words to the characters voice. I was a little off but it was fun. The instructions helped a lot and the computer even gave you a chance to practice. It was funny to see Chris rock speak in a women’s voice though.

It was said that this exercise allowed actors to invent a new interpretation of feeling to a shot. It is mostly used when there is certain dialog that cannot be saved and tracks have to be rerecorded.

Moving forward in the Titanic Sound effects section you got to see a lot of the different gadgets they used to recreate the titanic movie like the Six plate flatbread editing console. I wasn’t able to get the full experience because apparently you have to sign up and be part of a tour group to use that section but I was apple to look at different types of film like the standard, reversal and optical soundtrack film. To me film was just film. I also enjoyed watching a exhibit where you was able to see the background work of a live baseball teams. It was nice to see a whole team working together to create one image for everyone to enjoy.20150422_120135

Call your Girlfriend Podcast

A podcast is an audio or video program which is placed on the internet  and made available for users to hear. It is different because often this type of media is a conversation where you get first hand opinions from people. They discuss how they feel about different experiences or ideas of whatever their podcast is about.

I listened to call your girlfriend podcast and chose the episode Body choice because it was the title that stood out to me. I wanted to find out what was this podcast about and why would they name it that so i clicked on it to listen to more. listening to body choice is ann friedman and Aminatou Sow first podcast with a life audience. Ann Friedman is actually celebrating her birthday where she said she was drinking a little bit(which was kinda funny) but shortly they introduced  brittany calendar on who actually thought of the name for the show. I really loved how they started out describing the scenery and what they were wearing. I love being able to visualize the scenery so i could have a little movie in my head. Brittany discusses why she chose the name for the podcast and she explained that body’s choice is just you mostly let your body choose your every move. Meaning what you want to eat, how you want to dress etc. They then started talking about my fav artist Rihanna which really caught my attention. They had me hooked from there. I love listening to this podcast because it was like i was overhearing a really interesting conversation in a classroom. The background was really quiet and they had a live audience so as they are making jokes you literally hear people in the audience cracking up which makes it even more funnier. They were real, conversational, and interesting sharing thoughts about what was going on today with the music industry. I like how they incorporated the music on who they were talking about and honestly there was nothing i really didn’t like. I liked them so much i listened to another episode and plan on following them lol.

I decided to listen to their very first podcast because i wanted to see how they introduced their selves to the world. i found out that they started this podcast to take their friendship to a whole new level of communication. Ann discusses her experience in Brooklyn (she is originally from California) and how she feels about the weather( which is relatable to anyone here or not from here). They also discussed Obama Care and the process of signing up. This podcast is definitely  for women only. When i tell you!! they bring up period problems really frequently which is not a problem for me but a man would definitely find this disturbing. The period jokes are funny if you can relate. They seem to always discuss what is going in the media which i love because i so do not follow up on that stuff. Like whats in the magazines and on TV (ie. grammys). They make it known that they are feminist and you can definitely tell

My Podcast

I would like to do a podcast called The Gap. I am a senior in college with this being my last semester currently. I will now be entering “the real world” where I would have to fend for myself. Often I engage in conversations about prosperity and success. How do people make it to that point where they can live comfortable and be happy? What steps do you take? Where do you even start? I feel like so many people have opinions about this topic and can express some thoughts on this idea. What I mean when I say “The Gap” is the gap between high class and low class, being satisfied with your situation and being unsatisfied with it. As some may already see the middle ground between the two has diminished. The social stratification between classes and satisfaction has changed a bit because from my experience the gap has gotten bigger.

The audience I will be trying to reach is young adults starting from twenty one up to individuals in their prime like early forties. I say this range because as a young adult, you are experiencing this situation presently. You have an idea on what will make you happy and because of that you approach certain things based on your opinions. Often as people grow up they forget about their happiness. Life obstacles hit them and their main concern is surviving. So it would be neat if I could get some ideas on what they feel being satisfied, happy, and successful. As far as individuals in their prime, they are already in a predicament where they are either satisfied and took those steps where they gained some knowledge on the system or not satisfied where they made mistakes and learned something from those mistakes.

I want to shine light on a idea that is relevant to everybody; the meaning of life. I’m sure that everyone has ran into a person who looked so unhappy, like life itself had no meaning to them and you often asked yourselves how did they get to that point? I want to create a podcast sharing thoughts on what it means to be successful. Nevertheless, success is different to each person. Some think it is financially, others find it to mean happiness. Whichever way it goes it gives me versatility that I feel people would want to listen to and share some ideas on the topic. I would want to be the host of this “show” because this can give me insight on how to look at success. In regards to my show, I feel individual’s attention span on one topic would not last so I could picture my podcast lasting about 30 minutes. Because of the versatility some ideas for my podcast would be the value of life and success, social stratification (class), and meaning. All of these ideas will shine light on the topics of being happy and feeling meaningful and touch base on why there is a gap between high class and low class. Why is it so important to have that gap.

alien monster

I realized while playing with as many effects as i could that distorting the pitch of this sound would turn this annoying baby sound into a computerized monster. Playing with pitch shift i managed to deepen the sound of this crying baby.

STORY

this story discussed a girl that was taking away from her mother because of abuse. She described her encounter with school and her first fight. Listen while i make this story come to life.
